This unit is for member’s ages 11-18. In this project, you will investigate a wide variety of food choices. You will select one culture or ethnic group within the United States to study in depth. Cultural group is described as a group of people who share distinctive characteristics, such as beliefs, customs, arts, or region of the country, such as: Cajan or Creole, southern, Tex-mex. Or barbeque cookery. Ethnic group shares characteristics such as religion, language, ancestry, culture or national origin. Examples of ethnic groups within the United States include Amish, Jewish, Native American and Hawaiian. Members will accomplish the following learning experiences:
- Learn dietary patterns of an ethnic or cultural group
- Plan, prepare and serve ethnic or cultural meals
- Gain a broader understanding of an ethnic or cultural group
- Share experience with others to promote greater understanding and appreciation of different cultures

Colorado State Fair and Local County Fair Exhibit Requirements
Project Exhibit Rules for All Units
- Include a copy of the recipe used, attached securely to the e-record. No commercial mixes are to be used.
- Bring food items on sturdy white paper plates and/or covered heavy cardboard in a zip-lock bag for display of food exhibits when possible. Plates and pans will not be returned.
- Only completed e-records, supplements and canned goods will be returned.
- Food items that show signs of mold growth or otherwise would not be safe to eat at time of judging or that need refrigeration will not be accepted.
Cultural Foods Unit 30
Exhibit will consist of the following:
- Completed e-Record and manual that includes: Activity 1 page 11; Activity 2 page 12; Record pages 13-14, Meal Report pages 15-16 with emphasis in your story about your accomplishments presented in a sturdy binder/notebook.
- A food product with recipe representative of the cultural or ethnic group within the United States that you selected.
Note: The food product must be safe to hold at room temperature during judging and display.
