4-H Small Engines
“Start Your Engines”---Welcome to the world of power engines! With over 60 fun activities, this small engines curriculum helps youth understand how small engines work, how they work for us and how to keep them working. Put some spark and fuel into your youth program with this hands-on curriculum.
Step 3: Select Your Project
Unit 1 Crank It Up!
This unit is for member ages 8-18 years old, that have little or no experience with small engines. Members will accomplish the following learning experiences:
- Use operator’s manual to guide maintenance repair, and adjustments
- Learn major parts of engines
- Importance of clean air to efficiently functioning engines
- How to replace a spark plug and much more
Unit 2 Warm It Up!
This unit is for member ages 8-18 years old, that have knowledge in small engines. Members will accomplish the following learning experiences:
- Learn about different engine types
- Learn the internal parts of an engine
- Specialized tools used
- Engine sizes
- Compression
- Seasoning your engine
- Safety issues
- How to start you own business
Unit 3 Tune It Up!
This unit is for members 8-18 years old that have had experience with small engines and it is recommended that the member complete the first two units before doing unit 3. Members will accomplish the following learning experiences:
- Learn about tearing engines down and rebuilding an engine
- How to use diagnostic tools
- How to “listen” to engines for specific problems
- How to properly maintain engines
- How to use the Internet to fine resources, rules and regulations regarding small engines
- Selecting a replacement engine
- How to start your own business
- Learn about potential small engine careers
Unit 4 Advance Small Engines
This is for members who have an interest in doing a self-determined study of small engines. Members will the following learning experiences:
- Plan specific goals and course of action
- Become a Junior Leader in the small engine project
- Design your own small engines project

Colorado State Fair and Local County Fair Exhibit Requirements
Unit 1 Crank It Up!
Exhibit will consist of the following:
- A Completed Small Engines manual and e-Record presented in a sturdy binder/notebook including appropriate sections in the manual completed and other items such as diagrams, drawings, photographs or attachments related to activities in the manual
- A display board on any topic from the small engines manual. Display may include an additional item related to the topic, such as tools, spark plugs, safety gear or a lubricant or fuel sample. You may use diagrams, drawings and photographs. Label and use captions to make your display as educational as possible. The standardized display board size 4' x 3' is to be used for 4-H projects.
Unit 2 Warm It Up!
Exhibit will consist of the following:
- A completed Small Engines manual and e-Record presented in a sturdy binder/notebook including appropriate sections in the manual completed and other items such as diagrams, drawings, photographs, or attachments related to activities in the manual.
- A display board on any topic from the Small Engines manual. Display may include additional items related to the topic such as a classification of engines, identification of engine parts, a calculations sample. You may use diagrams, drawings and photographs. Label and use caption to make your display as educational as possible. The standardized display board size 4' x 3' is to be used for 4-H projects.
Unit 3 Tune It Up!
Exhibit will consist of the following:
- A completed Small Engines manual and e-Record presented in a sturdy binder/notebook including appropriate sections in the manual completed and other items such as diagrams, drawings, photographs or attachments related to activities in the manual.
- A display board on any topic from the Small Engine manual. You may use pictures or any records you kept to provide evidence of your accomplishments and what you have learned. Display may also include an additional item related to the topic such as the air and fuel systems, the electrical system, a diagram of the engine block, or a diagram of how to reassemble the air and fuel system, or the electrical system. Label and use captions to make your display as educational as possible. The standardized display board size 4' x 3' is to be used for 4-H projects.
Unit 4 Advance Small Engines
Exhibit will consist of the following:
Note: This unit can be used for any type of engines (tractor, car, etc.)
- A completed e-Record with emphasis on your accomplishments in your story presented in a sturdy binder/notebook. (Self-Determined)
- Include the following information on the specific project information page in the e-Record.
a. goals
b. plans
c. accomplishments
d. evaluation - A display board on any topic related to Small Engines. You may use diagrams, drawings, charts and photographs. Label and use caption to make your display as educational as possible. The standardized display board size 4' x 3' is to be used for 4-H projects.
