4-H Visual Arts Project

Do you like to draw, paint, work with clay or fiber arts, and then this is the project for you. Can you see yourself someday having your own art studio or having your artwork in a gallery? In this project, you will explore art techniques, art history and culture, the science behind the art and artistic challenges. You will develop their artistic skills and talents while learning the elements and principles of design.

This manual is for member’s ages 8-18 years old. The member may stay in this manual for several years but need to have a different exhibit each year. Members will accomplish the following learning experiences:

  • Learn painting techniques
  • Learn printing techniques
  • Learn graphic design techniques
  • Learn the elements and principle of design
  • Explore art techniques, art history and culture
  • Explore the science behind the art and artistic challenges

Step 4:

Colorado State Fair and Local County Fair Exhibit Requirements

General Exhibit Requirements:
Project Exhibit Rules for all Units:

There is no limit for years of participation in a unit.

The Visual Arts project has two manuals –Portfolio Pathways and Sketchbook Crossroads. Portfolio Pathways has three chapters; Painting, Printing, Graphic Design. Sketchbook Crossroads has three chapters: Unit 1—Drawing; Unit 2 ---Fiber Arts and Unit 3 –Sculpture.

Portfolio Pathway Exhibit will consist of the following:

  1. Completed e-Record in a sturdy binder/notebook.
  2. Complete a minimum of 2 art techniques listed under the media of Painting, Printing or Graphic Design in which the member is enrolled. Provide pictures of all completed art techniques on the specific project information page in the e-Record. (Art techniques for painting: acrylics, watercolors, abstracts, sand painting, self-portrait, action painting, oil painting with impasto, scumbling and perspective, and encaustic painting. See manual for printing and graphic design techniques.)
  3. Explain in your 4-H e-record story what you learned.
  4. Exhibit –display your best art design. Oil and acrylic paintings should be no larger than 16" x 24" and ready to hang (no frames should be used). Water color paintings should use small matte and framed with glass. The framed water color should not be any larger than 16" x 24".

  1. Completed project manual and e-Record presented in a sturdy binder/notebook.
  2. Complete a minimum of 2 art techniques listed under the media of Drawing, Fiber, and Sculpture in which the member is enrolled. Provide pictures of all completed art techniques on the specific project information page in the e-Record. (Art techniques for drawing: continuous and contour, shading, perspective, paper choices, colored pencils, pen & ink, calligraphy, and cartooning. See manual for fiber and sculpture techniques.
  3. Explain in your 4-H e-Record story what you learned.
  4. Exhibit—display your best art design or scuplture. Framed drawings should be no larger than 16" x 24" including the frame and ready to hang. Fiber art should be framed and ready to hang, and no larger than 16" x 24".
